American Idol Season One favorite Tamyra Gray celebrated my birthday yesterday by making her Rent debut as Mimi at the Nederlander Theatre. With a Liza ‘do, racoon eyes and cover-up duds, she debuted a radical new look for everyone’s favorite heroin addict, getting fans buzzing from the second she stepped onstage. Check out these exclusive backstage shots of her first night in bohemia. Photos by Bruce Glikas for Broadway.com

Last night at Grey Gardens the following juicy line got a nice big laugh:
“They can get you in East Hampton for wearing red shoes on a Thursday. They can get you for almost anything. It’s a mean, nasty Republican town.”
Why, you ask? The First Lady herself, Laura Bush, was in the house! Unfortunately, she didn’t hang around to say hi to the two Tony nominated stars of the show, Christine Ebersole and Mary Louise Wilson. But we got this quick shot of her fleeing with daughter Jenna (sister Barbara got away before we snapped!) Photo by Bruce Glikas for Broadway.com…

Fresh off his Drama Desk Award win on Sunday night, Company star Raul Esparza received a possibly even greater honor earlier today: his very own Sardi’s caricature. At a private reception at the legendary theater district eatery, Esparza got choked up as he addressed his friends and family…while also noticing a family resemblance: “It looks like my father!” he laughed. On Monday night, an eclectic group of performers took part in a reading of Romantic Poetry: The Musicale for the LAByrinth Theatre Company. The show, which will premiere at New York Stage & Film upstate this summer is a “soaring love song to impossible romance” according to its creators, playwright John Patrick Shanley (Moonstruck, Doubt) and composer Henry Krieger (Dreamgirls, Side Show).

Oprah was in the house—the Broadway Theatre, that is—last night to check in on her musical The Color Purple and its new leading lady, Fantasia Barrino. Not that Miss Fantasia needs any checking up on… box office sales are through the roof and the critics have been raving. Still, who wouldn’t want a little one-on-one time with O?
