Photo Tease: A Hairspray Reunion Out West

September 30, 2007 6:11 pm

On the night before opening night of his new musical A Catered Affair in San Diego, star/co-author Harvey Fierstein received some very special backstage visitors: Hairspray co-stars Marissa Jaret Winokur and Matthew Morrison! Here, our favorite Tracy Turnblad and Link Larkin pose with Harvey and fellow Catered Affair stars Matt Cavenaugh, Faith Prince and Leslie Kritzer. Photos by Bruce Glikas for Broadway.com

Val and Al Make It Official!

5:19 pm

Good News: One of Broadway’s best-looking couples is on their way to the altar! Yes, ladies and gentlemen, Tony Yazbeck got on his knees and proposed to Jessica Lee Goldyn the other night… and she said yes! (I mean, wouldn’t you?) Of course, the lovebirds met while standing two spots apart on the line of A Chorus Line—he as Al, she as Val, a role she’s still shaking her T and A for eight times a week. Congrats, guys!

The very very very funny Brooks Ashmanskas (a 2007 Tony nominee for Martin Short: Fame Becomes Me) took time out of his Broadway matinee idol schedule on Wednesday to show our cameras around backstage at The Ritz. Here’s how it went. (Give the video time to load—it’s worth it!)

5:21 pm

The creative minds over at SpotCo. have done it again, reinventing their iconic ad campaign for Chicago for a series of brand new internet ads. This terrific kick-off spot (seen exclusively on Broadway.com first!) features Michelle DeJean as the one and only Roxie Hart. Enjoy!

Three reasons I love stage legend Elizabeth Ashley (now appearing in the just-opened Dividing the Estate), as further witnessed by her witty and wise My New York feature.

1. She named her dog Che.
2. She specifically prefers the hot dogs sold in Union Square.
3. Her “Drugged Actress Foiled in Art Heist!” fantasy. Click to read on.

First Look: The Return of Googie Gomez!

12:39 pm

The joyous Rosie Perez is back on Broadway playing the role she was perhaps born to play: The Ritz bathhouse entertainer Googie Gomez. I got a look at some of her outrageous costumes during a backstage video shoot on Wednesday (video to follow later today!) and she’s looking cute! Below is an exclusive photo of Rosie in full Googie drag only for Broadway.com readers, along with some other photos from the show, which opens on Thursday, October 11. Photos by Joan Marcus

Rosie as Googie!

Kevin Chamberlin, as in-hiding Gaetano Proclo, realizes just what kind of bathhouse he’s visiting when he runs into Matthew Montelongo outside the steamroom.

Comedy hijinks! Rosie and Kevin have an encounter on a bed while Terrence Riordan (as Michael Brick) and Brooks Ashmanskas (as Chris) hide out below.

I had an amazing time talking with the age-defying, fit-and-fabulous Andrea Martin last week during her lunch break in rehearsals for Young Frankenstein (in which she’s brilliant!). The results can be seen here.

Photo Tease: Life on the Line

September 27, 2007 6:35 pm

Broadway.com photog Bruce Glikas spent some time backstage at A Chorus Line yesterday and we’ll be unveiling a photo op in the coming days. Here’s a tease of the backstage life of Broadway’s hardest working triple threats.

Jason Patrick Sands, last seen in Legally Blonde, now playing Don.

Spring Awakening original cast member Krysta Rodriguez, the show’s new Bebe, stretches before showtime.

The fab Deidre Goodwin, still landing laughs eight times a week as Sheila.

First Look: Danes as Doolittle

12:50 pm

Just got in these nice photos of the Roundabout Theatre Company revival of Pygmalion, now in previews for an October 18 opening, with some exclusive to Broadway.com picks in the mix. Enjoy! Photos by Joan Marcus

Chad Doreck, who placed 4th on Grease: You’re the One That I Want (and now stars in Altar Boyz), on the bad reviews that were written for Grease and its reality stars before anyone set foot on the stage:

“Everyone was prepared for that—and they’re getting standing ovations every night [anyway]. Jesus Christ could have performed in the competition and been slaughtered by the reviewers!
