Broadway met the Billys of the upcoming Billy Elliot at a press event earlier today. Broadway.com will have video and photos from the splashy launch tomorrow, but I couldn’t resist giving you a peek of Broadway’s most adorable new stars! Photos by Bruce Glikas for Broadway.com

Entertainment Indeed

March 14, 2008 1:31 pm

En route to the R Family Vacations cruise, I was able to catch Dancing in the Dark, the new stage musical version of the MGM classic The Bandwagon at the Old Globe Theatre in San Diego. With a fresh new book by Douglas Carter Beane (The Little Dog Laughed, Xanadu) that dares to make sense of the classic-but-random movie, this show is clearly Broadway-bound and for good cause. It’s like every classic backstage Broadway musical swirled into one, with a pre-approved roster of hit songs (”That’s Entertainment,” “Triplets,” “You and the Night and the Music,” “That’s Entertainment,” etc. etc. etc.) and a top-notch cast of theater pros like Scott Bakula (welcome back to the stage, Scott!), Beth Leavel, Patrick Page, Mara Davi, Adam Heller and Sebastian LaCause onboard for the fun. Gary Griffin directs, and Warren Carlyle shines as choroegrapher. Could it make it to New York for next season, which is already littered with new musicals? Time will tell. After the show, we took the below snap of Beane and Bakula. Photo by Bruce Glikas for Broadway.com

Broadway Goes to the Circus

Industry big-wigs are flying down to Miami this weekend to check out what could become Broadway’s next gotta-see event: Fool’s Paradise. The Mandelstam Theatre of Performing Arts is playing host to the VIP workshop weekend run of Jim Camacho’s high-flying new rock musical, a love story set among circus performers in Nazi-occupied Paris. Check out these exclusive shots below from rehearsals!

The Tony Race Is About to Get Interesting…

March 12, 2008 11:33 am

Broadway is buzzing that Glory Days, the new musical that finished a run at Virginia’s Signature Theatre in mid-February, will land at Broadway’s Circle in the Square Theatre next month. The show—about a reunion between four high school buds one year after graduation—received strong reviews for its honest emotions, terrific cast of newcomers (Steven Booth, Andrew C. Call, Jesse JP Johnson and Adam Halpin) and kick-ass songs. And the most glorious news: it’s only 85 minutes long! By the way, the musical was written by two friends in their early 20s who actually seemed to have started writing it one year after high school: librettist James Gardiner and songwriter Nick Blaemire (right), who may or may not have been inspired by the structure of Altar Boyz during his time on the road with the show. These days, Blaemiere plays one of the nerdy Whiffles in Cry-Baby, which could land him right in enemy territory if the two shows wind out battling for a Best Musical Tony Award!

Watch This: Kelli’s Cut

February 20, 2008 7:30 pm

Kelli O’Hara went through a traumatic experience this morning–and we caught it all on video! Actually, the rising star simply chopped off her locks for the role of Nellie in the upcoming South Pacific. But when you’re a blonde babe like her, you gotta look out for your assets! Happily, haircutter-to-the-stars John Barrett did a bang-up job. Want to see the results? Watch the video!

First Look: A Catered Affair, The Poster

January 30, 2008 7:04 pm

There it is, the Norman Rockwell-influenced artwork for the upcoming A Catered Affair. As the show harks back to days when stories and characters actually meant something, I suppose it’s only appropriate that the poster for the show have such an old-fashioned spin. The drawing is by Charles Pyle. Since it’s not every day you get to see illustrations of your favorite Broadway stars, I’ve included some close-ups below. So why are they all perched on a taxi top? Go see the show and find out!

Matt Cavenaugh and Leslie Kritzer as the newlyweds-to-be.

Faith Prince and Tom Wopat as her folks.

Harvey Fierstein as Uncle Winston.

Check out this adorable exclusive from the folks at A Catered Affair, which starts March 25 at the Walter Kerr: studio shots of the show’s young lovers, Leslie Kritzer and Matt Cavenaugh. The up-and-comers play Jane Hurley and fiance Ralph Halloran, two starry-eyed lovers in 1953 Bronx. How much do you love the taxi shot?! Photos by Jim Cox
